Why do we accept the old ways?

Why do we accept the old ways?

Let’s embrace energy with insight

Whether we like it or not, for most of us, we’re going to be doing business from our computers for the next while, and whether that business is a high street retail shop, a family butchers, commercial printers, national chain of fashion houses or a blue-chip multinational, the one thing that is key, now, more than ever, is information. And especially information and insights that allow us to control carbon, cost and cash.

2020 – A platform for change?
We’ve spent, pretty much all of 2020 watching, and listening, as countries and the world relays back information to us on a global scale, and without that data, the direction, message, and plan of attack would have been based on estimates, best guesses, or just pure hope.

Now more than ever we need to maximize our returns, consolidate our position and where we can, adapt and change our behaviour to give our businesses the best fighting chance as the vaccine rolls out and we return to a normal life as soon as possible

As an EnTech (Energy Technology) business, we have long been on this journey. Leading with insights, driven by data and disrupting the industry of electricity provision in Ireland with actuals. That is, actual 30 min data about your home’s or your businesses consumption. Not estimates, not lazy readings as and when it suits, not best guesses, and not smoothed out averages. The ‘Electricity of Actuals’. Delivered electricity to our domestic and commercial clients, allowing their behaviour of today to change the outcome of tomorrow.

Making marginal gains
As someone in their 3rd decade in business, one thing I was always taught was that the small margins make the difference. And as controversial, and dare I say ‘Marmitesque’ as Sir David Brailsford is, you can’t help but align yourself with his thinking (certainly his success) when he talked about Team Sky Cycling, and how improving every little thing by 1% would add up to huge gains. So, over the years, I’ve always looked to data to give me the facts I need. I’m used to running my sales, my business unit, our team, the company, on these data lead insights so when I joined the energy sector in 2019, I was simply staggered that, for the most part, it operates in such an antiquated, ‘business blind’ environment.

Confusing bills, multiple add ‘service charges’ and language that an actuary would struggle with (there’s another day’s discussion on this topic alone)! One dimensional discussion around pricing and unit rates which to me seemed a moot point especially as it became apparent many businesses or households don’t know what their consumption is to start with. But if you know the latter, and you can do something about it, then the former looks after itself, doesn’t it?

Time to change?
So, as we all sit in our now, not so new ‘work chairs’ at the kitchen table, the box room, the shed, or the cupboard under the stairs like a wise old Harry Potter wouldn’t it be great to have all your domestic or commercial electricity consumption information at your fingertips. On your own portal, your mobile or tablet and be able to make changes to your premises that you can graph, track, and find a new baseline from each day? Change today with a positive contribution in savings tomorrow. Data lead, correct, timely and consistent.

Hopefully, but surely, the answer is ‘yes’, and as you’re looking for that 1% in all areas of your business, I can assure you there’s at least that in how you’re consuming the precious resource that is electricity.

If you want to make that marginal gain in 2021. Get in touch we would be delighted to talk.
